The Legacy

Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi

Born on February 4, 1922 in Gadag, Karnataka, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was an iconic Hindustani classical vocalist, regarded as one of the greatest Indian classical musicians.

Known for his powerful, emotive voice, his renditions of ragas, bhajans and abhangs were particularly acclaimed, touching audiences across generations.

He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in 2008.

The Present

Pandit Anand Bhimsen Joshi

The fourth son and disciple of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Anand Bhimsen Joshi was born and raised in his father's musical environment, and carries forward the Uttar Hindustani Kirana Gharana tradition. His voice bears a striking resemblance to his father's.

He trained under Pandit Shrikant Deshpande (grandson of Sawai Gandharva) and Pandit N. W. Diwan, and completed his formal music education up to Sangeet Visharad (Gandharva Mahavidyalaya).

He is an Akashvani (All India Radio) artist and a recipient of the Vishnukavi Award, Mahurgad Sansthan.

His repertoire spans Hindustani classical music, Marathi Santwani bhajans, Kannada Daswani bhajans, and Hindi devotional compositions popularised by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
